The Apuan Alps in bloom

The Apuan Alps are beautiful all year, but in the spring they are a particularly rare beauty. In May, in fact, all mountain and hiking lovers gather on Monte Croce to take part in the intoxicating spectacle of the jonquils in bloom on its slopes. The jonquils or rush daffodils cover the green Apuan meadows in white, for a natural spectacle that must not to be missed.

First swims in the sea

Spring at last, beginning of the long-awaited bathing season in Versilia! With nearly 30 km of coastline, the first day on the beach is an important moment for the whole area. There are more tourists, the beach clubs open their doors and the seaside promenade comes alive.

Markets, fairs and festivals

Spring is a season full of markets, fairs and festivals of all kinds. One of the most characteristic is undoubtedly that of Corpus Christi in Camaiore, where a religious feast meets the age-old tradition of sawdust carpets. For a whole night and into the early hours of the morning, an entire community gets to work to create huge carpets of coloured sawdust, a unique show of ephemeral art that can only be seen and admired for a few hours. Depending on the date of Easter, this event sometimes takes place in the summer. Another traditional fair is that of Santissima Annunziata in Viareggio, known locally as the “Ciottorini” fair held on 25 March. In Massarosa spring brings with it the Madonna del Carmine feast and the annual farmer’s exhibition with animals, stalls and a funfair. In Seravezza in late April there is Enolia, the festival that aims to acquaint visitors with the quality oil and products of the area.

Birdwatching

Between March and May the LIPU (Italian bird protection league) reserve in Massaciuccoli is populated by different species of birds that pass through here on their migratory routes. It is the perfect time for an excursion by boat, either at sunrise or sunset, to see the courtship
