The aim of this tour is giving tourists and locals a cultural itinerary among Forte dei Marmi streets. Among the villas of the Roma Imperiale district you can understand the story, the devolpment and the fame of the town. Forte dei Marmi has changed from an unhelathy dump area to an important place for marble industry. Its name is linked to this.
When did Forte dei Marmi’s myth begin? At the end of the 19th century a group of important german people looked for a wild and unspoilt holiday location. The nearby Viareggio is too touristic and so this group of people discovered this tiny village between the sea and the Apuan Alps. Dr. Carlo Vanzetti came to Forte dei Marmi because of his friend Kurz who used to go to the town and decided to build a house on the beach. Later he bacame a promoter of the sun and sea bath therapy. The village grew in population and Forte dei Marmi wanted to became independent from Piatresanta. In 1914 Forte dei Marmi became independet and the municipaly was born. In the 1920s the Agnelli’s family, The Capannina disco and the upper classes came to Forte dei Marmi to excape from the mass tourism which was the symbol of the nearby Viareggio. Forte dei Marmi has become an important town since then.
